When it comes to taking care of public places, I believe it depends on the culture or lifestyle of the people and not necessarily on whether the facility is newly built or beautiful. Taking an example from my continent, most of the countries in it have a poor mentality when it comes to the usage of public places, and I am using the toilet as a case study.
Just like me, I always find it difficult to make use of public toilets whenever I travel away from my place because I already have the mindset that public toilets are not usually kept clean and that I might get a toilet infection if I use them.
I'm not taking myself out of the picture. We always feel that a staff member should be employed to take care of the place and ensure it is clean at all times. With this mindset, we tend to use the facility carelessly, believing or expecting that someone is employed to clean up after us.
It becomes even worse in places like school hostels, where there is a system of combined effort to keep the public toilets clean. There is no way such a place will ever be properly maintained because there will always be setbacks—people refusing to take up the task when it’s their turn.
I don’t know how this behavior came to be, but the nonchalant attitude in humans when it comes to this, is very bad.
It’s not just about the public toilet—it goes deeper into other areas such as public electricity facilities. In fact, some people even go as far as stealing parts from electrical installations—both the ones currently in use and the ones that are not functioning. It is very bad.
But I have seen how other continents act responsibly when it comes to taking care of public facilities, and honestly, it’s so contagious.
Thanks!
