Silver doesn't typically degrade. It will tarnish over time, but you can polish it off since it's just a surface level chemical reaction. I'm curious where you saw it remove an actual layer of silver, unless they were using a chemical dip. That stuff is acidic and does remove a layer off the surface. For usable things you can buy special polishing cloths that won't damage the item. For coins, it's not recommended to clean them unless they don't have collector value. For rounds and collectibles you can put them in an air tite to prevent them from tarnishing. At the end of the day, though, silver is silver whether it's tarnished or not. 😁

Yea I was reading if you try to clean the tarnish a tiny amount will come off. Guessing they were using chemicals based on what you said.
I do think it’s interesting because I don’t believe gold tarnishes.
