‘What's in the box?’ Brad Pitt shouted desperately, a phrase that echoes memories of a Venezuela full of uncertainty. In Venezuela, that uncertainty is not unfamiliar to us (2000), although we prefer to wrap it up in the classic warning: ‘Pandora's box has been opened.’ This expression became our daily bread, defining those moments when a small event unleashed a storm of totally unexpected consequences.

To remember everyday life in Venezuela is to see a succession of open boxes. When someone said that Pandora's box had been opened, we knew that a major upheaval was coming. It could be anything from an economic change that sent prices on a rollercoaster ride to that family secret that exploded in the middle of Christmas dinner. Opening the box was synonymous with chaos, with that ‘not knowing what tomorrow will bring’ that Venezuelans learned to navigate with humour and enviable resignation.
However, the chronicle of our box does not only contain storms. Greek mythology tells us that, after all the evils escaped, hope remained at the bottom. In the Venezuelan context, that hope manifests itself in our immense capacity to reinvent ourselves amid the rubble of the unexpected.
Every time we ask ourselves what is in the box of our reality, the initial fear fades away in the certainty that we will find a way to move forward. We are, without a doubt, the most valuable content of this story that we continue to write together with great courage and faith.

En Venezuela, esa duda no nos es ajena (2000), aunque preferimos envolverla en la advertencia clásica: «se abrió la caja de Pandora». Esta expresión se convirtió en nuestro pan de cada día, definiendo esos instantes donde un pequeño evento desataba un vendaval de consecuencias totalmente inesperadas.

Recordar la cotidianidad venezolana es ver una sucesión de cajas abiertas. Cuando alguien decía que se había destapado Pandora, sabíamos que venía un «rebulicio» de los grandes. Podía ser desde un cambio económico que transformaba los precios en una montaña rusa, hasta ese secreto familiar que estallaba en plena cena navideña. Abrir la caja era sinónimo de caos, de ese «no saber qué pasará mañana» que el venezolano aprendió a surfear con humor y una envidiable resignación.
Sin embargo, la crónica de nuestra caja no solo contiene tempestades. El mito griego cuenta que, tras escapar todos los males, al fondo quedó la esperanza. En el contexto criollo, esa esperanza se manifiesta en la inmensa capacidad de reinventarnos entre los escombros de lo imprevisto.
Cada vez que nos preguntamos qué hay en la caja de nuestra realidad, el miedo inicial se diluye ante la certeza de que encontraremos la forma de seguir adelante. Somos, sin duda, el contenido más valioso de esta historia que seguimos escribiendo juntos con gran valentía y mucha fe.
