Comfort is turning us into useless people

I often find myself staring at the screen, hoping the blinking cursor will solve the dilemma for me. “It’s not that hard”, I whisper to myself, whilst ordering takeaway simply because washing a couple of frying pans feels like a domestic odyssey. Technology has sold us a sanitised version of existence, where any trace of effort is perceived as a system error that must be corrected immediately.

We are losing, almost without realising it, our innate capacity for action. Before, necessity mobilised the body and the mind; today, it merely moves the thumb across the tempered glass. That frantic quest for immediacy, that sweet poison of ease, has turned us into passive spectators of our own lives. We have convinced ourselves that avoiding friction is synonymous with success, forgetting that it is precisely that resistance that keeps us awake and human.

Doing things for oneself, feeling the weight of a tool or the genuine exhaustion after a walk, has become a strange act of rebellion. ‘It’s not that difficult,’ I repeat, but the inertia of the sofa weighs like lead. Absolute comfort acts as an anaesthetic that numbs the instinct to excel. By delegating our autonomy to algorithms, we are forgetting the taste of genuine achievement. It is not about rejecting progress, but about reclaiming our will. Because truly living requires a necessary dose of difficulty and, though we may be reluctant to admit it, regaining that vital drive, it’s not that hard.

La comodidad nos está volviendo inútiles

Me sorprendo a menudo mirando la pantalla, esperando que el cursor parpadeante resuelva el dilema por mí. «It’s not that hard», me digo en voz baja, mientras pido comida a domicilio solo porque lavar un par de sartenes me parece una odisea doméstica. La tecnología nos ha vendido una versión esterilizada de la existencia, donde cualquier rastro de esfuerzo se percibe como un error del sistema que debe ser corregido de inmediato.

Estamos perdiendo, casi sin darnos cuenta, nuestra capacidad innata para la acción. Antes, la necesidad movilizaba el cuerpo y el ingenio; hoy, solo mueve el pulgar sobre el cristal templado. Esa búsqueda frenética de la inmediatez, ese dulce veneno de lo fácil, nos ha transformado en espectadores pasivos de nuestra propia biografía. Nos hemos convencido de que evitar la fricción es sinónimo de éxito, olvidando que es precisamente esa resistencia lo que nos mantiene despiertos y humanos.

Hacer las cosas por uno mismo, sentir el peso de una herramienta o el agotamiento real tras una caminata, se ha convertido en un extraño acto de rebeldía. «No es tan difícil», repito, pero la inercia del sofá pesa como el plomo. La comodidad absoluta actúa como una anestesia que adormece el instinto de superación. Al delegar nuestra autonomía en algoritmos, estamos olvidando el sabor del logro genuino. No se trata de rechazar el progreso, sino de reclamar la voluntad. Porque vivir de verdad requiere una dosis necesaria de dificultad y, aunque nos dé pereza admitirlo, recuperar ese impulso vital, it’s not that hard.
