Set aside your naivety

I walk down the street and observe people's hands. Everyone swears transparency, but the air smells like a cheap trick. ‘Nothing up my sleeve,’ my boss tells me as he cuts the budget; my neighbour repeats it, boasting of an ethic he does not practise. We have believed the story that honesty is the natural state of man, when the reality is a scenario full of double standards.

The utopia of total nakedness makes me nauseous. From childhood, we learn that survival requires a hidden ace, a word kept quiet at the right moment, or a smile that serves as a shield. There is no such thing as a life without secrets. Anyone who says they have nothing up their sleeve has simply perfected the art of hiding it. The gaze of others is never an open book; it is an encrypted manuscript where the truth is only a decoy to prevent us from seeking out the main deception.

I have stopped waiting for the big reveal. I have accepted that the world is a constant magic show where the surprise is not the trick, but the naivety of believing that it does not exist. Seeing others without filters means recognising that all of us, absolutely all of us, keep a dagger, a letter or a ghost under the fabric of our skin. The real harshness is not in the lie, but in the farce of pretending that our sleeves are empty. In the end, the biggest deception is that phrase I spit out bitterly today: “nothing up my sleeve”. Don't look for honesty where there are only well-made seams. Nobody plays fair here.

Camino por la calle y observo las manos de la gente. Todos juran transparencia, pero el aire huele a truco barato. «Nothing up my sleeve», me dice el jefe mientras recorta el presupuesto; lo repite mi vecino alardeando de una ética que no practica. Nos hemos creído el cuento de que la honestidad es el estado natural del hombre, cuando la realidad es un escenario lleno de dobles fondos.

La utopía de la desnudez total me produce náuseas. Desde niños aprendemos que sobrevivir requiere un as escondido, una palabra callada a tiempo o una sonrisa que sirva de escudo. No hay tal cosa como una vida sin secretos. Quien diga que no tiene nada bajo la manga, simplemente ha perfeccionado el arte de ocultarlo. La mirada ajena nunca es un libro abierto; es un manuscrito cifrado donde la verdad es solo el señuelo para que no busquemos el engaño principal.

He dejado de esperar la gran revelación. He aceptado que el mundo es una función de ilusionismo constante donde la sorpresa no es el truco, sino la ingenuidad de creer que no existe. Ver a los demás sin filtros implica reconocer que todos, absolutamente todos, guardamos una daga, una carta o un fantasma bajo el tejido de nuestra piel. La verdadera crudeza no está en la mentira, sino en la farsa de pretender que nuestras mangas están vacías. Al final, el mayor engaño es esa frase que hoy escupo con amargura: «nothing up my sleeve». No busques honestidad donde solo hay costuras bien hechas. Aquí nadie juega limpio.
