The dampness of intentions
The air in downtown Toronto was so heavy that afternoon that walking a few blocks toward the lake felt like wading through warm soup. The humidex was off the charts, and as I held my double-double from Timmies, I felt that the word “heat” fell short of describing the atmosphere. My friend, a purebred Canuck who ignored the sweat under his Blue Jays cap, let out a resigned sigh: “Feels a bit muggy out there, eh?” At first, I nodded, thinking only of my sticky skin, but I soon realized that in this corner of the world, humidity not only saturates the oxygen, but sometimes dampens intentions.
That same morning, we had witnessed a minor gong show at work when a colleague tried to take credit for someone else's project. When mentioning it, my friend didn't use technical terms; he simply said that his attitude had been “totally muggy.” That's when the piece of the puzzle fell into place. He wasn't referring to the weather, but to that social haze, the disloyalty that feels dense and difficult to ignore. He explained that, although for us muggy is the heat that forces you to seek air conditioning, the term has traveled to describe someone who plays dirty or acts two-faced.
At the end of the day, as we searched for loonies for the parking meter, the sky threatened an electrical storm that would clear the air. It was a beautiful contrast: the relief of rain against the heaviness of the day. El aire en el centro de Toronto pesaba tanto aquella tarde que caminar unos pocos clicks hacia el lago se sentía como avanzar a través de una sopa tibia. El humidex marcaba una cifra ridícula, y mientras sostenía mi double-double de Timmies, sentí que la palabra “calor” se quedaba corta para describir esa atmósfera. Mi amigo, un Canuck de pura cepa que ignoraba el sudor bajo su gorra de los Blue Jays, soltó un suspiro resignado: «Feels a bit muggy out there, ¿eh?».
