A Lesson from the Street

Alcohol and engines, a fatal combination.

20251214_140504_437..jpg

Greetings to all the guest authors and readers who are part of yesterday, Saturday, was a day that left me thinking a lot after a vehicle crashed into the fence of a square in the center of town, a loud noise that broke the tranquility of Saturday.

There were no serious injuries, but the scene was quite grim, with glass everywhere, twisted metal, and a crowd of people wondering what could have happened. But what hurts the most is when you find out that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, something that happens far too often on our Venezuelan streets. This is not a simple isolated accident; it is a reflection and echo of a problem that will continue to grow, that alcoholism that destroys our lives and communities. lives and destroys communities.

Physically, alcohol wreaks havoc on the liver and heart, as well as the brain. I have seen friends who started with a simple beer and ended up with cirrhosis or uncontrollable tremors. The consequences of this go far beyond the body, as there are addictions that break up families, leaving children without parents or partners in a cycle of violence. Here in Venezuela, between stress and crisis, many turn to drink as an escape, but what seems like relief usually turns into chains that bind the future.

Here in this country, alcoholism hits hard because it is very easy to see a group of people drinking alcohol on any street corner, and this is intertwined with everyday reality.

I'm not saying that alcohol is bad. What is really bad here is when we mix it with everyday reality, that is, a neighborhood gathering. Surely you'll have a beer to forget about the day's queue or intermittent electrical problems. Of course, a beer to refresh the day doesn't hurt us, but the statistics don't lie. If we look closely, there are many traffic accidents caused by alcohol, resulting in hundreds of deaths per year, and chronic abuse fuels crime and poverty, since it is not only the drinker who suffers, but also innocent victims such as pedestrians who could have been in that square and families who lose a breadwinner. It is a vicious cycle that drains resources from an already saturated healthcare system, where an addict not only destroys themselves but also burdens the community with emotional distress and loss.

I Call for Reflection

That crash in the square was a brutal reminder that alcoholism does not discriminate. It can strike anyone at any time, and the way out is to seek help in support groups. I know it is very difficult for anyone to join a group such as Alcoholics Anonymous, as these do not operate everywhere, but as a society we need to talk about it without any taboos. We need to promote alternatives such as sports and art to channel stress. We must support policies that regulate responsible consumption. If these lives were saved yesterday by a miracle, today is the time to act so that there is no tragic tomorrow.
