From here, in our little town in the municipality of Ezequiel Zamora, Monagas state, springs one of the resources that has been both a blessing and a curse for Venezuela: oil.
This area has an economy that revolves almost exclusively around the oil industry, so it should be a bastion of prosperity. However, the reality on the streets of Punta de Mata and its surroundings is a grim reflection of the deep crisis plaguing this country.
As we all know, the entire country is facing an economic storm and rampant inflation, along with an economic contraction. This crisis is far from being an abstraction, as it has a direct and devastating impact on our community. All the oil activity that sustained our family is now in a state of decline, evidenced by a lack of investment and frequent operational problems.
This is a truly bitter irony. How is it possible that a municipality sitting on a sea of oil can suffer the same or worse shortages as the rest of the nation? The centralization of oil revenues and poor management turned what was supposed to be a source of autonomy and well-being into a mechanism of dependence and control. While macroeconomic figures plummet, our community is dealing with shortages and the deterioration of public services This is a constant uncertainty, as we are facing a reality that we cannot control, but we can decide how to respond to it. Without sounding anarchic or like a creator of chaos, we know that the absence of an oppressive power in this corner of Monagas would change the life of everything around us, because this crisis forces us to rediscover the strength of our community ties and to seek a means of subsistence on the on the margins of a state that has proven incapable of guaranteeing the well-being of its people, since true wealth does not lie underground but in the resilience and solidarity of our people.
Anyone with a sense of common values and reasoning would ask the same questions: how long will there be so much corruption, how long will life be so bad, how long will the same problems continue? Because if all of us who did not study can see the problem from the outside and witness it firsthand, how is it possible that these leaders are not aware of the situation? And that is where the answer is obviously a declaration that they do not care about the people, they only care about power.
This publication has been written by me without any knowledge of economics, much less oil. It is simply reason and logic seeking common ground.
