Finding a Way Out to Survive
Previously, I shared about how difficult it has been for me to find a shop to rent for my business initiative, and given the difficulty, I kept pushing myself and making adjustments to my plans. For one thing I know is that when there's a will there must be a way out.
Two weeks ago, I went to inspect a shop that I was told is vacant, but on my inspection, the shop and environment isn't conducive for my liking. The shop was just too small, dirty and unhealthy to do business in. Even in that condition, I still went ahead to negotiate the rent price. This was what got me losing total interest in the shop. The rent amount they gave me was beyond my imagination. After calculating the cost of renovating the shop plus the rent money, it was obvious that it's not a choice to take.
However, I have told myself that I need to do something fast as each passing day eats into my capital. Already I have been spending money for transportation for move around in search of a shop. These daily expenses were gradually reducing my capital. Instead of keeping the capital at home, I need to get my products which I intend to sell. I told myself whether I have a shop or not, I should get the products, and by all means we will find a way to sell them.
Having products on the ground means that business has started and we must find a way to sell what was bought. My wife helped out a lot to see that we got the sales started. She took some of the clothes to neighbors and friends where we got our first sales.
Meanwhile, I noticed an open space at a road junction near my house where local vendors of various goods stay mostly in the evening for business. An idea stuck to my mind, why not use the place during the day since it's free for everyone to use? I made a kind of low height table and a kind of wooden frame for hanging clothes and took a spot along the road.
By all means, we found a place to sell our products. People are buying and the sales are going well. The only problem we have is rain because it's an open space without a shade for covering. Since it's along the road, building a wooden shade is not allowed. The space is free for use at least for now, the only people we were told to watch out for are the local government officials but they don't even come to that part of the town because it's very far from the business district.
My wife has taken charge of running our roadside business spot while I continue searching for a more suitable permanent location. She has really taken a nice control on our daily operations. Each morning she is setting the display with care and placing the clothes on our wooden frame while I support her with the behind-the-scenes work and searching for a shop.
We have found a good arrangement. While she is meeting the sales and customer service aspect at our "pop-up" location, I take care of inventory management and accounting. I also assist with the set up and taking down of the display, which is essential when the weather is less than accommodating.
We have worked out a routine whereby I will stop in on a daily basis to check on things and help out as necessary, especially as things get busy or she wants to take a little break. This model continues to work really well and minimizes the stress of being in this temporary arrangement.
However, our search for a shop is ongoing. I am still actively searching for a shop with suitable rent, but now we are not in such a rush. Having a business operating - even in this somewhat unconventional manner, allows us some room to make decisions about where to set up shop permanently.
