Making a Farm in my Yard
For the past five years I have been trying to make a proper farm and grow my crops for family use, but each attempt has always ended in failure. The reason is that I often lost interest and gave up before seeing results through to harvest.
Twice, my wife has taken things into her own hands, and gone ahead to clear the bush with the help of the boys and plat seeds of maize, tomatoes and cassava. However, she too had to abandoned it because still thought I would take it over from her. Being a busy woman with business to attend to daily, it was impossible for her to maintain a farm. And I too was too occupied with work to have the time to commit to maintaining a farm.
This year however things are going to be different. Luckily, we have a large portion of farmable land behind the house in our new residence which gives me the perfect opportunity to do a little farm that I can manage properly. Since I wouldn't be leaving the premises daily I would have the time to tend to the crops and ensure that they grow successfully.
I have already started preparing the place and clearing the weeds to make way for farming. Each morning for two weeks, I worked on the land clearing the weeds gradually until I was able to clear all the space.
Meanwhile, I have earlier planted corn at the side of the house and it already started to sprout. But for the rain that has refused to fall I am afraid those innocent seedlings may not survive until the rain begin to fall properly.
But there's something funny in the whole situation. Whereas I thought my wife would be happy that I finally begin to show commitment to making a farm which she so much desire, she hasn't said a single word it despite all I have done. She just feel uninterested. I began to feel her reason for that is because of the numbers of times I have disappointed her over farming, and she didn't think this time will be different.
But I am determined to prove her wrong and make this farm is success. As soon as the rain begins to fall properly I will begin planting the crops that I planned to cultivate.
Growing your own food do not only reduce expenses but also ensure that you have fresh and healthy food for your family. By June to September most of the crops I plan to cultivate should be ready for harvest. I am looking forward to harvesting my own home grown vegetables, corn and yams.
