Whenever I set an early alarm, I wake up 20 times in the hour before it. Just not to miss it. Same today. Alarm set at 4.15am, and since 3am I started waking up around every 5 minutes. I’m glad I only took a shower to get to the bus stop, and didn’t have any coffee. That way, I was able to get some sleep in the bus. Not high quality, but something.

I went to Quito to request a new passport at the embassy. I had thoroughly checked the list of requirements and made sure that the guy taking my pictures had the info paper for the specs that the German passport requires. Last time, which is 10 years ago, I had to get new ones taken. But today? So easy. 20min. In, called right away, documents checked, paid, left. 20min. That’s so different then Ecuadorian agencies.

There, you generally arrive on time or early, and they make you wait an hour regardless. But if you’re late, you forfeit your ticket. When it’s finally your turn, they tell you that the list on their website or the list that they had given your prior was not complete, or that some requirement changed, and then send you out to get that. With a new ticket. Of course, they won’t tell you all the requirements that weren’t on the list at once, but one by one, so you repeat that. Then it’s lunch break, and they make you wait. Then they don’t come back because somebody called a meeting or an exercise or some classes or whatever. And so on. You get the picture.

I arrived early enough to grab a quick coffee before going in. And I started reading a book by Sartre in the short time I waited. I barely read 2 pages. Since I had a lot of time left afterwards, I went to my brothers favorite coffee shop and invited myself to a $7 specialty coffee. It was SO delicious. Once I got into those types of coffee, I started to enjoy them even more.

Afterwards I went to a friend’s place. She had twisted her knee in Tae Kwon Do, and wasn’t comfortable driving for a long time. So I offered to arrive by bus and take her home in her car. Said and done. We made a lot of fun about her car which is an automatic and really not well adjusted. She’ll get a new one once her divorce is finally through. Which is a whole story in and of itself.

I didn’t do much in the afternoon, just some work and then self-defense classes with Kami. She liked it, and I think she’ll get some worth out of it. It’s a little boring for me, but we’re the only students for now, so I rather go with her as motivation.
So far. Early up, hopefully early down. Have a good night!
