Deer everywhere! - My Actifit Report Card: May 17 2026

in Actifit6 days ago

Hey Actifitters,

A few weeks ago, I learned that the city I live in and a few others around had performed a deer culling. I knew it was planned but I thought it was for next year. I understand the reasons but I like seeing all these deer, and I'm glad to see in my neighborhood, there are still a lot of them. This one was hanging out in the yard, with no idea that Kaia was growling at him from behind the window.

Brand new antlers growing, that's pretty cool.

Later in the afternoon, still in the yard, Le Chat was trying to teach Kaia the art of the grumpy face.

But clearly Kaia wasn't being a good student, way too many things to keep an eye on, she's always a guard dog before anything else.

Le Chat doesn't care anyways, she's the best, and her talent cannot really be taught.

Of course, we also started our daily walk behind the front yard.

After chasing all these deer earlier in the day, Kaia started limping more than she's been the past few weeks. But she seemed somewhat okay in the small forest, so we started on our way to the bigger forest.

But quickly, it was obvious she was in real pain, limping even more. So we turned around pretty quickly and went back home, where a bunch of deer were waiting for us again. The smaller one, probably younger and female, was the first one to see us. Then another one that looked like the one earlier in the backyard. Kaia was on leash, so they were safe and started to play with the smaller one chasing the other one, even poking him with its head. Or maybe they were fighting, not entirely sure. It was fun to watch, except maybe for Kaia who really wanted to join the game, even with her painful leg.

Since our walk was really short, I decided to go for a run. I made sure Kaia got some rest for her leg, but I ignored my own knee pain. I kept it short though, just 5k at a slow pace. Again, even if I walked for a few minutes in the middle, I kept the overall pace below 6min/km, so it is slow but not so bad considering my current form. And bonus, it is very counter intuitive and I didn't expect it, but my knee is less painful after the run. Let's see when I can go for another one this week.
As always, thanks for stopping by and see you tomorrow.

My father always used to get good cuts of deer meat when the population had grown too big and the hunters stepped in. It was quite the specialty for us, and he prepared it carefully and it was delicious.

I hope Kaia will be better, soon!

Thanks for Kaia! The vet also thinks she tore her ACL, but just in case, she put her on anti-inflammatory pain killer for a month, and if that doesn't really help, sedated X-Rays will confirm whether it's the ligaments. So, rest for a month, no running, no jumping, and no real walking, that will be tough for Kaia! And for me too, that was a great excuse for exercise.
I was also glad to read Nero is doing well, that's great news!

As for deer meat, I do know most of the meat they got from that last culling was offered to charity associations, so they could distribute it to local families. It is !INDEED very good meat, but just like other delicious meats, I have to try and forget where it comes from...

I went vegetarian/vegan after eating the best meat of my life three days in a row (Christmas days). I was thinking about doing so before, but then I had them and was like "yeah this can't get any better", so I quit with the best possible memory :-D And here in Ecuador, good meat is not really available. The animals have too much space to move I was told, and their muscles are being used and that makes the meat harder or something like that. On the other side, the variety of vegetables growing here, how fresh they are and how cheap? I definitely have an advantage :-D

All the best to Kaia, I'm rooting for the pain to go away, soon, so she can jump on tree stumps again!
