We live in the era of promised transparency, where every transaction should be a clean and fair digital handshake. However, just before the final click, a parasitic number often appears on the screen, defying logic and patience. It is at that moment that language breaks down and doubt settles in the heart of each and every one of us: are we paying for a real service or simply funding a bureaucratic fiction we did not ask for?
The subtle tyranny of the invisible commission
It happened to me yesterday in front of the screen. The ticket price was reasonable, until the ‘handling fee’ jumped it by twenty per cent. I stared at the cursor, caught in that uncomfortable silence of the modern consumer. It’s not just the money; it’s the slow erosion of trust. I felt as though I were paying an algorithm for the privilege of doing all the registration work myself, whilst an invisible intermediary reached out from the digital void.

Thanks to the Banana 2.0 app for illustrating my post.
“Fee for doing what?”, I asked myself aloud, and the phrase bounced off the walls like an echo of futile resistance. The question isn’t seeking a technical explanation about servers or logistics; it’s a cry for ethical help. It’s the suspicion that we’ve grown accustomed to phantom tolls: the ‘convenience’ fee that only suits the company, or the ‘maintenance’ cost of money that they themselves use to make a profit.
Resignation usually wins the day – who can we complain to? We click because we need the ticket, the flight or the accommodation, but something lingers within me after that transaction. The phrase hangs in the air like a warning: when value disappears and only the charge remains, commerce ceases to be an agreement and becomes a white-collar assault. We pay, yes, but with the bitter taste of knowing that we’re being charged for the very air we breathe between one click and the next. Pay closer attention to your online spending...
