Today — July 10th — is actually a very special day around here because it is National Kitten Day!
National Kitten Day is a "nameday" that is celebrated every year on July 10th. It is basically a day that was created to raise awareness about shelter adoptions of cats and kittens during what is currently pretty much the peak of "kitten season."
Shangri and Nala as kittens
For example, it was about this time of the year that we adopted Shangri and Nala as kittens, a couple of years ago. And we are so happy to have them as part of our family!
There are quite a few ways in which you can participate in the effort to give happy forever homes to kittens, including adopting... but also fostering if you can't make a commitment to having a permanent pet. Many shelters get entire litters of kittens dropped off, and they need foster families to take care of them until they're old enough to be adopted.

If you can't actually do a Hands-On thing, know that donations of cat food and other supplies to make young cats' lives easier — could be toys, blankets, towels and more — are also very welcome.
It is important to help shelters during this high traffic season because they also help with spaying and neutering which will prevent the wild population of cats from getting too far out of control.

Some shelters also accept help in the form of willing participants sponsoring an adoption fee for those who have the love and space to give to a kitten, but can't necessarily afford the initial fees. Sometimes you can also sponsor reduced adoption fees.
For example, when we adopted Shangri and Nala it was during a special promotion where our local shelter was offering to adopt two kittens and pay only one adoption fee.
