Good Day Everyone
Have you see a horde of cats? I mean a large number of cats gathering in one place, it's so crowded and they live and sleep next to each other... throng around doing things together.
Whether those cats start to be overcrowded, problems will keep popping out. From sick to disease, fight for space and food, and they start to destroy their own environment... From dung everywhere because they might not want to wait to use toilets, or maybe no toilet at all so every cats decide to have their own spot for their toiletry.
In the long run, health becomes an issue. Once a cat gets sick, the other will be easily infected. It is not only something from the illness, they get easily become aggressive due to being stress. Limited shelter could lead to increase of aggressiveness, fight and killing between each other. Food will be dominated by the stronger and we can expect some malnutrition on some weaker and smaller cats.
So to minimize these problems of overcrowded cats, we must start from the basic first. This is not about domesticated cats vs feral and stray cats, as long there are overcrowded, problems will be born and growing big. The basic is simple, controlling the cat population.
First we must control the cat breeding, limited their access and capacity so they do not give birth too many. The most common ways is to do some spay and neuter programs.
If those cats are domesticated cats, then we need to promote these spay and neuter programs to the cat owners and to the community. Educate people about animal welfare and if it is necessary ask the government to set up some law in in preventing overcrowding before it starts.
Solving these issues of overcrowded cats not only improves animal welfare but also supports healthier healthier ecosystem.
However this post is not about cats. These cats are just metaphor...
How That Works For Human
So we are talking about human. We can not treat human the same as cats, which we just capture some, cuts their balls off, then we call it as population control.
Each Nation Has Their Own Population Problems
Unlike cats which the problem mostlikely overcrowded, human population has different kind of problem. In some countries, people are just too many, whether it is overcrowded or not, and the number of citizens become an issue for their nation... For example China in the past.
They saw their population was too large, and they knew it could bring problem later so they had a policy to limit breeding. Each family was set to have only one child, and they had to forfeit the second. This was a harsh one and many other countries saw this as human right issue, because there were gossips and rumors that government really terminated some life to make sure only one child for a family.
Japan right now has a problematic demographic issue. They have too many old people and little of children, so they age demographic doesn't make a pyramid shape, it's more like a rectangular one. It seems nobody wants to have children there, it is too expensive to raise them.
So Japan Government is encouraging their people to have some kids. They try to give many incentives, from subsidized educational expense, and right now the famous one is there are a lump sum grant for a child you have. Government tries to make the problem soften, easier to handle, which is cutting cost for every children needs.
South Korea right now starts to have similar problem with Japan, which is their younger generation doesn't perceive marriage as a necessity. There is a viral movement of no marriage life in young Korean women. This could lead to a sudden drop in population of young generation people. So right now they try to make a grant or incentive for Korean who hold marriage, in hope many will be willing to marry and have kids.
How About Your Country or Your Government?
Actually our own country or nation have population issue, whether it is a chronic one or it is just to maintain some good balance. Just check your local policy and law, about children and family. You could learn and figure out what is your government trying to do with the population, what their aim or their goal is.
For example, my country is Indonesia, we have a rule of three here. It means that whatever the government programs are, they will only three children that are eligible for the participation.
For example, nationwide legal insurance, with the same insurance fee, the first three children will be automatically covered. The fourth and the rest would not be eligible for any insurance, you must register them as an individual adult.
In tax, there is a tax deduction for every kids you have, up to three kids. Then there is no more tax deduction.
So overall I can say my government is trying to control their population by limiting each family to have children between one to three. With these ratio, Government expect in long run the population demographic will be well maintain, especially in age distribution.
Ok, that's my story here. How about yours? Do you know their programs in controlling population?
Thank you for coming and reading my post. I live in Jakarta, Ex-Capital City of Indonesia. Currently I am running a small business with less than 10 people. I used to live by making money online, that's why I like being here, on HIVE, and in #PIMP - (Paper In My Pocket) community.
