The International Day of the Families; Case Study of Cameroon in Africa

Hello dear friends and audience of this space community. Today I wish to share with you a story I titled: "The international Day of Families; the case study of Cameroon in Africa".
° Considering the importance the international Community attaches to the families, 15 May every year,, is commemorated as International Day of Families. This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/471/237. The international Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of social, economic and demographic process affecting families.


° The symbol of the International Day of the Families is represented with a solid green circle with a red picture inside. This artwork is composed of basic drawings of a house and a heart. This suggests that families, which offer a secure and nurturing environment for individual of all ages, are the focal point of society.

° This Day is celebrated worldwide by states or Countries of the world, for example in Ontario- Canada, the government established Family Day in order to give hard-working individuals more time with their loved ones. Though only a few provinces formally celebrated it and only non-federal employees usually get the day off, it's a wonderful bonding time for families in participating areas.


Case Study of Cameroon:
✓ Cameroon joined the international Community on May 15, 2025, to celebrate the International Day of Families, under the theme **Family Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the second World Summit for Social Development"". The day was marked with various activities and events that highlight the importance of families in the society. It provided an opportunity to promote awareness of family related issues and acknowledged the role of families in national Development.


✓ The international Day of Families focused on specific theme related to family well-being, social development, and the impact of global issues on families.
✓ In Cameroon the day was championed by the Minister of Women Empowerment and the Family, under the umbrella of the Ministry of Women Empowerment and the Family. Prior to the day, the Minister who plays a key role, organized and promoted the celebration in collaboration with other stalkholders.

✓ The celebration of the day in Cameroon served as a reminder of the importance of family values, the need for family support and the challenges faced by families.
✓ This event was characterized by community gatherings, educational programs, such as workshops, newspaper articles, media content and other activities that promote family Unity and well-being. School and educational establishments also got involved and observed the international Day of Families. Meanwhile some families went on excursion to have a tight bonding with their family members.


° Previously, international Day of Families had included even picnics, beach gatherings by some families, meal sharing and in some cases recognition of outstanding family members, and discussions on topics like family resilience and social change.
