Synopsis :
The story takes place in the present day in the United States.
Father Jud Duplenticy (Josh O'Connor) is a former boxer turned priest. After losing his temper and striking a deacon, he is transferred to a rural parish and appointed curate. This parish is led by Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), whose way of running his church does not please everyone.
Prentice Wicks (James Faulkner) is the former monsignor of this parish and Jefferson's grandfather.
Prentice had asked Grace (Annie Hamilton), Jefferson's mother, to stay at the church if she wanted to benefit from his inheritance, which she did. When Prentice died, the inheritance disappeared and, in a rage, Grace ransacked the church, without finding the inheritance. She allowed herself to die on the spot.

Le père Jud Duplenticy (Josh O'Connor) est un ancien boxeur devenu prêtre. N'ayant pu se retenir de frapper un diacre, il a été muté dans une paroisse rurale et y est nommé vicaire. Cette paroisse est dirigée par monseigneur Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin) dont la façon de gérer son église ne plaît pas à tout le monde.
Prentice Wicks (James Faulkner) est l'ancien monseigneur de cette paroisse et le grand-père de Jefferson.
Prentice avait demandé à Grace (Annie Hamilton), la mère de Jefferson, de rester à l'église si elle souhaitait bénéficier de son héritage, ce qu'elle fît. A la mort de Prentice, l'héritage a disparu et, de rage, Grace a saccagé l'église, sans retrouver cet héritage. Elle se laissera mourir sur place.
Father Jud finds it quite difficult to tolerate Jefferson Wicks' controversial methods, whether in confessions or during his sermons targeting certain parishioners.
One day, Jefferson takes a break during mass, going into a storage room near the altar and leaving the door open. He collapses and is pronounced dead.
The police are baffled and call in Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to solve the case.
There are few loyal parishioners, but some of them provide clues and other information for the investigation.
Jud is suspected, as he had an argument with Jefferson shortly before.
But what killed Jefferson Wicks? A dagger was found in his back, but something doesn't add up.

La police ne comprend pas et appelle le détective Benoît Blanc (Daniel Craig) pour éclaircir l'affaire.
Les paroissiens fidèles sont peu nombreux et certains apporteront des indices et autres éléments pour l'enquête.
Jud est soupçonné, puisqu'il a eu des mots avec Jefferson, peu de temps avant.
Mais qu'est ce qui a tué Jefferson Wicks ? Un genre de poignard a bien été retrouvé dans son dos, mais quelque chose ne colle pas.

I really liked it. It's in the Agatha Christie genre. If you've seen Knives Out and/or Glass Onion and enjoyed them, you'll enjoy this one too.
The story unfolds, we're left to ponder, and at the end, the explanations come.
Rian Johnson is the director and screenwriter, as in the previous films.
His cousin Nathan Johnson composed the music.
