Splinterlands Teach & Triumph: Know Your Unit Abilities!

in Splinterlands3 days ago

Greetings to all Splinterlands players! I hope you are all doing great this week. Today, I'm going to share my entry about this week's Community Engagement Challenge: Teach and Triumph! My topic is about Unit Abilities or Skills. They are like your units talents or super powers. They will provide your team special buffs and can turn the tide of battle in your favor if you are smart to use them.

Classes of Abilities

There are a lot of abilities in Splinterlands. Being familiar with them and how to use them in your games can determine your victory or loss. There are different classes of abilities in Splinterlands. They are either offensive, defensive, debuff and support. The full list of abilities are in the link.

Unfortunately, I can't discuss all of them in my post so I'll just show how I use abilities in my games. Take for example the following games.

In the game, I had the Fire element. The unit in the first position (Frankarsgard) had no skills or abilities but the rest have that makes each member of the team useful in the game.

Chaos Furybringer (Reach)

The unit in second position has Reach. From this position, it can attack with melee. Without such skill, he wont be able to attack.

Vengeful Monk (Opportunity)

Another melee unit in the third position. It has Opportunity skill that enables it to attack the enemy.

Ember Roast Sow and Kanaaq Miner (Sneak)

The next units both have Sneak skill. This is a skill that enables melee units to attack enemy units in the rear.

All those abilities are offensive skills. They enable my units to attack the enemy from any position when normally, melee units can only attack from the front line. All those abilities are useful in this game.

Compare that to the enemy ability. The first position unit of the enemy has Void skill that negates magic attacks. Since I'm not using any magic unit, that skill has no use in this game. In the game, my units were able to attack the enemy during each round using their skills. This led to my winning this particular game.

In the next game, I'm the one who had the Death element while my opponent had Fire. The ruleset gave all our units Opportunity skill. Here is the breakdown of my units in the team.

Nim Guard Captain (Void)

Nim Guard has Void that reduces magic attack. It is useful in this battle because the enemy had a magic unit (Great Bear Druid). It's a debuff skill because it reduces the enemy's magic attack to Nim Guard.

Sorrow Harvester (Weaken)

Sorrow Harvester has a powerful debuff skill that applies to all enemy units. Weaken reduces the enemy's max health by one, making them easier to dispose of.

Little Sister (Life Leech)

Little Sister's skill increases her health and max health each time she attacks an enemy. This can be classified as a support skill (to herself) since it increases her stats. This is particularly useful when the units are poisoned in some rulesets.

New Beluroc Aegis (Taunt)

The unit has a Taunt skill that draws attacks from enemy units. This is an ideal strategy in Opportunity rulesets since units with high attack and low health like Sorrow Harvester will be safe from attacks.

In the game, each unit help the team with their respective abilities. In the last round, the enemy had a magic unit against my Nim Guard Captain whose Void skill made him immune to magic attacks. This helped my team to win this game.

I chose the Earth element in the following game. I had two key units with that helped the team with their abilities.

Dread Tafarian (Heal)

The unit has a good support skill that heals itself. This is an important skill since the rest of the units cannot attack from first position. Tafarian has to be able to keep the first position or else the team is lost.

Spellmonger (Thorns)

Spellmonger has no attack but has a strong attacking skill, Thorns. It enables him to return +2 damage to melee units who attack him. This is particularly useful against Vengeful Monk who has Opportunity skill.

In the game, Dread Tafarian kept healing himself and was not killed by the enemy. This meant that the archers who were my attacking units were safe. The Spellmonger was able to dispose of the enemy's Vengeful Monk with its Thorns skill. This is also important since it saved my other units from the Monk.

Conclusion

I hope that you learned how to use abilities from the sample games above. The unit abilities are useful in games and if used correctly, can enable you to win. Be familiar with your units abilities and know when to use them against the teams of your enemies.
