I’ve seen Makgeolli quite a lot in Korean dramas, usually in those cozy countryside scenes or moments where people are just sitting together, eating and talking. It always looked interesting, but I never really knew much about it and never find interesting. But something pique my interest and I finally decided to look it up properly… and honestly, I was kind of surprised by what I found.

Makgeolli is actually one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in Korea. It’s a traditional rice wine that looks a bit milky and cloudy, unlike the clear drinks I’m used to seeing. From what I read, it has a slightly sweet, tangy taste and even a little natural fizz to it. It doesn’t feel like a “heavy” alcohol drink at all, more like something rustic and homemade.
What really caught my attention was how old it actually is. Makgeolli has been around for centuries, even long before modern drinks like Soju became popular. It was something that ordinary people, especially farmers, used to drink after a long day of work. That part kind of gave it a different feeling for me, it wasn’t some luxury drink, but more of an everyday comfort drink shared among regular people.
That also made sense when I thought about how it appears in Korean dramas. It’s usually not shown in fancy settings. Instead, it’s paired with simple food, like pancakes, and shared in a very relaxed, warm atmosphere. It feels more about connection than alcohol itself. Almost like a small tradition that brings people together.
Another thing I didn’t expect is that Makgeolli is actually making a comeback these days. Even though it was less popular for a while, especially when stronger and more “modern” drinks became common, it seems like younger people and craft brewers are starting to bring it back. There are even new versions now with different flavors and styles, which is quite interesting.
The more I read about it, the more I realized Makgeolli isn’t just a drink. It kind of carries history with it. It has been part of daily life in Korea for a very long time, and somehow it’s still around today, just in a slightly different form..
Now when I see it in dramas, it feels different. It’s not just a random drink on the table anymore, it actually represents something more traditional and meaningful. I think it’s pretty cool how something so simple can survive for so long and still find its place today.
Thank for checking on my blog and have a wonderful day
