The song I have selected for today's post is Es un secreto by Nene Malo featuring Magenta. And as I have said on several occasions, cumbia villera is not a genre that I love or listen to every day.
It was never one of my favorites. I don't usually have playlists with this type of music, nor is it the first thing I put on when I'm alone. But I also can't deny that during my adolescence, this genre was everywhere at parties, gatherings, even on the street with cars blasting cumbia villera from their speakers. It's a memory that stands out to me from that time.
“Es un secreto” came to me by chance while I was exploring some of the artist's old songs. I didn't remember it as well as Bailan Rochas and Chetas, but when I listened to it again, I knew I had heard it at least a couple of times before. The truth is that it's quite entertaining to listen to, like most of Nene Malo's songs.
I'm not going to say that I'm going to start listening to cumbia villera all the time now, because that's not the case. But after bringing back a few songs, I started to acquire a taste for several songs that were quite well known in their day. Before, I might have been a little repelled by it, but not anymore, especially when I compare it to the musical production of today's street music.
Nene Malo was one of the most important artists of the cumbia villera genre in Argentina in the 2010s. He has a very distinctive style, as his songs are very comical with instrumentals that also have that style, but they are quite catchy.
Es un secreto is a collaboration with Magenta and is part of the most important stage of the artist's career, which was when he released his album Me Declaro Culpable in 2012... This album not only included this hit but also featured Bailan Rochas y Chetas, Chetos y Cumbieros, and El Garrote, which ultimately catapulted his cumbia career.
