On the other hand, Cape Verde were playing in their first-ever World Cup. Naturally, I expected Spain to dominate from start to finish.
Well, football proved me wrong once again.
The final score was 0-0, and I was genuinely surprised. Spain had chance after chance but just couldn't find a way to buried those chances. There were moments when I was already expecting the ball to hit the back of the net, only for Cape Verde's goalkeeper to come up with another unbelievable save.
Vozinha was simply outstanding. At 40 years old, he delivered a performance that many younger goalkeepers would be proud of. Every time Spain looked dangerous, he was there to deny them. By the end of the game, it felt like Spain were playing against a wall.
The defenders also deserve a lot of praise. They fought for every ball and never stopped believing. One of the moments that stood out to me was the late block that prevented what looked like a certain Spanish goal. Those are the kind of moments that can define a match.
What impressed me most was Cape Verde's mentality. Many teams would have been overwhelmed by the occasion, especially against a football giant like Spain. Instead, they stayed disciplined, defended bravely, and showed incredible determination throughout the game.
To be honest, this result is exactly why football remains the most unpredictable sport in the world. You can have more possession, more shots, bigger names, and still fail to win. Sometimes passion, teamwork, and belief can level the playing field.
As I watched the match, I kept waiting for Spain to score the winning goal. It never came. In fact, Cape Verde nearly stole all three points themselves near the end.
This game reminded me never to underestimate any team in football. No matter how strong a team looks on paper, anything can happen once the match begins. Cape Verde may have been the underdogs, but they played with heart and earned a result that few people expected.
