‎Chelsea Are Making the Right Call With Jesse Derry

‎Whenever Chelsea send one of our academy players out on loan, fans usually have mixed feelings. Some see it as a sign that the player is not ready, while others believe it's the best way for a young talent to develop. In Jesse Derry's case, I'm firmly in the second group.

‎When I heard he had signed a new contract before heading to Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan, I smiled. To me, that says Chelsea still believe in him. If the club was not serious about his future, they probably would not have tied him down to a new deal before letting him leave. The fact that there is not an option to buy makes it even more encouraging because it shows the plan is for him to come back.

‎Breaking into Chelsea's first team is not easy these days. The squad is packed with quality players, and every position is highly competitive. As much as we all want to see academy graduates wearing the blue shirt every week, the reality is that they need regular football to keep improving. Sitting on the bench does not help a young player nearly as much as playing every weekend.

‎I honestly think Portugal is a great place for him to continue his development. The Portuguese league has helped many young players grow into top professionals. It's a league that values technical ability, encourages attacking football, and gives young players opportunities to express themselves. If Derry gets enough minutes there, I believe he will return to Chelsea with much more confidence and experience.

‎I also have not forgotten what happened during his Premier League debut last season when he suffered that scary head injury. It was one of those moments no fan wants to see. Thankfully, he recovered, and now he has another chance to focus on football and continue chasing his dream.

‎As Chelsea supporters, we sometimes expect instant results from young players, but development does not always happen that way. Every player's journey is different. Some break through immediately, while others need a season or two away from the club before they are ready.

‎I'm looking forward to following Jesse Derry's progress at Sporting this season. Hopefully, he grabs this opportunity with both hands, enjoys plenty of game time, and comes back ready to fight for a place in Chelsea's first team. If everything goes well, this loan could be one of the best decisions the club has made for his future.

‎I will definitely be rooting for him because seeing another academy graduate succeed at Chelsea is something every fan loves to witness.
