‎How Much It Costs to Start 50 Broiler Chickens in Nigeria – My Simple Guide 🐔💰 ‎

in AgroHubyesterday

‎Hi Hive,

‎You might have been wondering how much do I need to start with 50 birds if you're thinking of starting a small broiler chicken business here in Nigeria. But the good news is starting small is completely doable which I will even advice for a beginner and with proper planning, you can actually turn the small start into a profitable venture. Based on my experience and present market prices in Nigeria, I will break down the expense you need to start with 50 birds .

‎1. Housing Costs 🏠

‎Housing is the most important factor in broiler farming and you have to put a lot of things into consideration while creating quality housing for your birds. For 50 broilers, you have to first consider the age target. Are you just want to raise the chicks from day old to three or four weeks and discard them. If you want to do this then you don't really need a huge structure but if you're planning on raising them to maturity then you will need a huge structure for that because they will need space to for ventilation ,grow bigger, and able to move around freely without being overcrowded.

‎Like I said earlier that the housing structure depends on your target age but if you're planning on raising them to maturity then this should at least get you a good cage

‎Estimated cost: ₦100,000 – ₦150,000 depending on materials and your location. You can save money by using local materials or repurposing an old shed.

‎2. Cost of Chicks 🐣

‎Day-old broiler chicks are probably what you’ll start with. And for 50 birds, which is a carton you need exactly 50 chicks. Though prices vary depending on the breed, supplier and seasons because day old broiler chicks are very costly during festive season. So I will advise you start when there is no festive season because of the price to make it more affordable.

‎Estimated cost per chick right currently: ₦900 – ₦1,200 depending on the breed
‎Total for 50 chicks: ₦45,000 – ₦60,000

‎And most importantly, buying your day old broiler chicks from reputable hatcheries is important to avoid unhealthy chicks.

‎3. Feed Costs 🍽️

‎Feed is the most important part of raising broilers because this cover 80% expenses to raise broiler chicken. They will need starter feed for the first 3 weeks, grower feed for the next 2 weeks, and finisher feed for the last 2 weeks before marketing.

‎Starter feed (0–3 weeks): 15–20 kg per 10 chicks

‎Grower feed (4–5 weeks): 20–25 kg per 10 chicks

‎Finisher feed (6–7 weeks): 25–30 kg per 10 chicks

‎For 50 broiler chicks, you might need around 200–220 kg of feed in total. With feed currently costing about ₦950 – ₦1000 per kg:

‎Total feed cost: ₦190,000 – ₦220,000

‎Feeding consistently and on time ensures healthy and fast-growing birds and prevent disease as well.

‎4. Vaccines and Medications 💉

‎Broilers need vaccinations and some medicines to prevent common diseases like Newcastle, Gumboro, and coccidiosis. Some farmers also add vitamins and antibiotics to the water.

‎Estimated cost for 50 birds: ₦5,000 – ₦10,000

‎Though this depends on the challenges you face while raising the birds because you might sometime spend more.

‎5. Miscellaneous Costs 🧴

‎This includes waterers, feeders, bedding (sawdust or rice husk), and electricity if you use heat lamps.

‎Estimated cost: ₦10,000 – ₦15,000

‎✅ Total Startup Costs

‎Let’s summarize everything:

‎ItemEstimated Cost (₦)

‎Housing100,000 – 150,000
‎Chicks45,000 – 60,000
‎Feed190,000 – 220,000
‎Vaccines & Medications5,000 – 10,000
‎Miscellaneous10,000 – 15,000
‎Total₦350,000 – ₦455,000

‎So, if you’re starting small with 50 broiler chickens, you should budget around ₦350,000 to ₦455,000. Though, prices vary depending on your location and the suppliers you choose.

‎My Simple Advice

‎1. Start small, plan well: 50 birds or less is perfect for beginners.

‎2. Feed is king: Don’t compromise on feed quality; many beginners does this to reduce cost and little they know is that it's also reduce quality, time wasting, affects growth and profits.

‎3. Keep your chickens healthy: Vaccinate and clean the pen regularly is very crucial be productivity.

‎4. Track your expenses: Even small savings add up. The earlier you know this the better.

‎Starting small doesn’t mean thinking small but with 50 broilers, you can quickly learn the ropes gain needed experience, and within a few cycles, you can scale to 100, 200, or more. Broiler farming in Nigeria is a high-demand business, and with dedication, you can turn it into a steady income source.
