There's all kinds of advice for how BEST to start your seeds indoors.
For me, after a few different trial and error attempts,
I have been starting my seeds the same way. I start with a nice, healthy, INERT seed starter. I sift it, to remove any larger bits, as I want NOTHING in the way of my seeds germinating. Even smaller chunks of bits can stop a seed from reaching towards the light.

Some seeds, like these ONION SEED STARTS are as tiny as the head of a pin! And a tiny bit of woody material in the seed starter will keep it from germinating. I made a video, step by step, showing how I go thru the entire process of getting the seed starter sifted, pre-moistened, watered, and sterile for seed germianting.

MANY Thanks!
And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.
