Nintendo Is Behind The Times in Online Gaming

in The Pubyesterday

This past Sunday my sons were eager to game online with their aunt and uncle. We got a Bluetooth speaker with a microphone built in, had it charging and sitting on the tower speaker behind the couch, and created a private Discord chat for all of us. We were off to a great start. Then, Nintendo incompetence happened.

(Created with Bing)

We got Mario Kart 8 running without issue. We tried to create a "Friends" room but couldn't "find" each other online without giving the room code. We finally got a race going. The kids were having fun. The first lap is over and we're into the second when everyone gets a big "A communication error ocurred" message on our screen. Suddenly, we all find ourselves kicked back to the lobby. Lovely.

We spent the next half hour troubleshooting. We changed the DNS to point to Google's servers. Nope. My brother-in-law ran what sounded like an obscenely long ethernet cord to their router to see if it was the WiFi causing the issue. Nope. Even with 200+ Mbps download speed and 25+ Mbps upload speed for both of us, we had the same repeated issue over a dozen or so failed race attempts.

I did some more research and this has been a known issue for quite some time. Supposedly you can get around the issue by joining or creating your own race, then have your other friends search for you and join your race. It's ridiculous we're having this many issues, but it sounds like Nintendo has a poor reputation for online gaming. Hopefully this idea works. Not for my sake, but for my sons, who were looking forward to spending time gaming with their aunt and uncle.

We'll have to see how it goes. Fingers crossed!

Our students here at school are on a Mario Kart team for eSports and it took a fair amount of time to get things just right so they can complete matches with other school districts. I haven't heard many complaints lately, but they might just be suffering through it if it is a known issue.

Nintendo’s online experience often feels way behind, especially when you’re just trying to let kids connect with family. We’ve had similar disconnect issues even with solid internet, so it’s clearly not just user error. It’s wild that basic features still require workarounds. For comparison, we switched to better gaming headsets and accessories from Razer, and even their support (I ended up calling the Razer phone number once) felt more modern than Nintendo’s whole online system. Hopefully they catch up soon, especially for family gaming moments like this.
