Foggy Start to the Work Week

The weekend was short due to work and the start of this week is no different. The only difference was the environment. On my drive to work it was really foggy and it took a bit longer to get there. You really could only see a few feet in front of you. No worries I left early enough to not be late. Today's blog will be about my morning work processing cargo for upcoming airlift.

I snapped these photos at about 7:50 just ahead of our 8:00 cargo processing start. Now it was still foggy but not near as bad as it was driving into work. We don't have a lot of cargo to process this morning, just 3 aircraft containers. A lot of the cargo you see in the one picture is inbound cargo from missions this weekend. I have to say the different environment with the foggy conditions made for a better work environment. It was just a pleasant scenery to witness.

Working alongside my military counterparts there is one saying that holds strong most of the time. That is hurry up and wait. Well we didn't have to wait too long but didn't get started until 8:15. Once the first container made it to the scale it only took 30 minutes to finish weighing everything.

Its not a difficult process. We get the weights, make adjustments on documentation and do a quick look at the exterior of the container to ensure its airworthy. This includes looking at the aluminum skin underneath the containers. This is done to ensure it fits and won't have any issues on the aircraft's roller system.

Next up in the process is inspecting every aspect of the cargo. The fog has cleared by now, but it's pretty humid now outside. The inspection is done with the inspector(s) and the unit representative(s) of the cargo. For all pallets and containers we have to open every box, container or case. We look for undeclared hazardous materials, explosives and contraband items. Also we due our part for agriculture too. Some countries are really strict on it. We are the last line of defense to ensure safety of flight for all the passengers and crew members.

We did find some lithium ion batteries in a piece of equipment. The unit decided to not ship it rather than preparing a Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods. Over the years, you would be surprised what some units try to sneak. I'll just say some of the Armed Forces services are notorious for it, haha.

It can be a long process going through everything. You have to a keen eye and a basic understanding of what your looking at. These three containers basically contained nothing more than spare aircraft parts. It took us about an hour with three inspectors. In the near future we have a mission that contains 14 pallets and that process will take most of the day. Once were done we put on seals and document the seal numbers. This ensures we know that no one has added anything to thier kits. Otherwise if we didn't it would be a lot of work for no purpose. Keeping sterility is important for not only passengers but cargo too.

Afterwards it was time to do the aircraft load plan, cargo manifest and breakdown the paperwork into packages. Three separate packages: one for our station files, one for the troop commander and the last for the aircraft commander. Not too much work for three containers, we were done as far as we could be by 10:15.

Now the only left to do is process the passengers, build a baggage pallet and load the aircraft. This will all be done when the aircraft arrives. Sometimes this is the more fun and less time consuming tasks.

I spent the rest of the day turning over inbound cargo to customers and putting away nets, dunnage, straps and pallets. A productive day to say the least and it's only Monday. A few busy days ahead but there will be some slower ones as well.

Take care, stay safe and enjoy the rest of the week. Until next time!

Very strange to me to see such thick fog. Hope you’re keeping well. The weather seems to start changing into autumn or winter mode too soon.

Yes I thought the same thing. Falls appearance but summer over shadowed it later in the morning. Still no change of colors here yet, strange. Usually I'm raking leaves by now

I love fog, though because of where I live now (no fog), I haven't seen it in years, and I miss it. It's interesting that some of the Armed Forces are notorious for trying to sneak things through your inspections. Congratulations on a productive Monday, and I hope that the rest of your week goes beautifully. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

I too like the mystique of fog. Its something to me that enhances my senses. Oh yes units try to sneak things through. Sometimes its hazardous materials because they don't want to bother with the additional requirements or paperwork needed. See a lot of personnel things they try to send to people as well. This includes anything from sweets to clothes to gaming systems for peoole they may know down range. Hoping for a more quiet week ahead but it hasn't happened yet.

Yes, I experience that too, a heightening and focusing of my senses. Fog gives the most interesting cozy, enclosed feeling for me. That's so wild, I mean I would expect that from civilians, but military personal doing it, and especially so consistently, surprises me. Well, may you have an easeful and peaceful flow to the rest of your week, my friend. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Its is little shocking but civilians we deal with, not many, are pretty good. Another thing that may surprise you is military police, they are up there on the list.

Thank you and I wish you a great rest of your week as well.

That's so utterly ironic that military police would be high on the list...lol! I guess many people try to get past the rules in areas where they don't work.

Sure thing, you're very welcome, and thank you, I appreciate that. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Is such a great foggy day, but you made it, nice day guy.

The fog is always a pleasant sight except when you have to drive or do any sort of activity in it. Those inspections are needed and helps keep people safe.

Yes driving no fun in it. I didnt mind working in some of it. Yes inspections necessary for overall safety. Thanks for dropping by.

That foggy start sounds intense but also kind of atmospheric! Glad the day turned out productive

I agree it made for better start if it was just normal :)

Fog like that is worrying when driving, not being able to see what’s ahead must be incredibly stressful… Yet, as I was reading, I thought: maybe the fog is exactly the kind of preparation you need to detect anything inappropriate that might try to sneak into the loads you process.
Take care Amigo and go fishing.

It can be especially when others drive too fast in it. Yes the eyes got some training for later. I thought about that too just didn't put it into words. More like the thought slipped my mind as I was composing, haha. Oh I hope fishing is in the cards for the upcoming weekend! Take care as well amiga :)

Hope the work week will be fine for you! Really foggy there! Here at least today a cold air arrived to start the autumn season but very sunny at the same time...
Have a great (work) week amigo!

Thank Amiga 😊 Yes it was very foggy but I found it cool and interesting. The fog as a bit of mastic to it. Plus Halloween is right around the corner. Well its Monday and I find myself counting the days until the weekend already, haha. You have a great week ahead also!

Yes it was foggy it made for a different unique start to the work day. Thank you for your appreciation & support!

Driving with the fogs you should have eyes as clear as hawk😁.
I thought just an x-ray machine is ok already for the cargo once they passed it. You still need to check it one by one😬.

Eyes work great going turtle speeds 😆

Well some of the cargo is too big for Xray plus it would take longer to empty a container than bring it inside to get scanned. Some containers have 25-50 boxes, cases or crates in them.

Takes a long time to inspect it one by one.😬

No matter how you do it, too long.

Foggy days can be nice, especially when you don't have to drive in them. I always hate driving in the fog because there are always morons who assume they can go regular speed in the fog and cause accidents... Glad things went well with the incoming deliveries there that morning, and I know what you mean about units sending through things when they shouldn't. It's easier to say sorry that it is to fill out the odious paperwork. They sure make you guys over document everything, one of those things I don't miss about working with the military. Paperwork was enough to drive you insane!

It was pretty thick fog and believe it or not thier weren't any accidents that I know of during the morning commute. Usually more is snuck into containers coming to the U.S. like cigars, alcohol and even drugs. Sometimes we have asked Security Forces to do a dog sweep. Mostly for checked bags though. Paperwork is defintely plentiful at times, some does as purpose while others you scratch your head and think why, haha

Fogs are signs of a great day😊!
Though driving in it could be challenging.

Yes challenging

Yeah!

Your work is an interesting one.
