I could eat whatever I wanted and never had to worry about weight gain (or rather, I had to actively try to gain weight because I was under pretty much my whole childhood/early adulthood). Now that I’m in my 30s, I have to watch my calories because the weight is packing on a lot more easily - my TDEE without exercise is 1200-1300.
The other thing is, a lot of people genuinely don’t have a super tuned concept of where calories are coming from. A huge plate of a meat and three veg meal is actually not super calorically dense (especially if you load up the veg) compared to a daily coffee with two sugars and cream, some deep fried snacks or nuts in the afternoon (“but it’s only a handful”), a glass or three of wine etc.
(This is after my mum made a comment on the size of my serving when I put together a very simple veggie and tofu soup - the entire bowl was 300 calories or so, but it was huge because, y’know, the amount of water in the soup.)
