MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "still living with that".

...Often outsiders can see what an individual refuses to. Those external eyes can evaluate a situation more clearly. Even with only limited knowledge of a situation, issues that a reasonable man take can be evaluated with fresh eyes.

Bringing a situation to one's attention can be tricky. You know when you can approach a person with positive results. Often the person doesn't want to hear another side of the situation. However, if a person is willing to listen, then a breakthrough may be possible.

For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 12 March 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3040: still living with that.

Below is my story:

An unsteady gait wasn't the only indication that Benzie was ill. Listless, no appetite, and vomiting two days prompted his owner, Charlie, to take action. Heading to the vet, he searched for a reason for the sudden illness.

"It's serious. Food poisoning that exposed an underlying condition," the vet diagnosed. Bewildered, he asked a series of questions that Charlie responded to vaguely. The verdict: immediate operation.

Benzie survived the complicated surgery.

Returning home, Charlie settled him inside. Determined to locate the source of the contaminant, he eased outside carefully moved items so he'd wouldn't disturb Benzie's sleep. He was a playful nine-month-old, spending more time outdoors. However, enjoying the backyard ceased as junk littered the yard. Staring upward, he recalled the five years accumulated items since his wife passed. Did I miss signs of Benzie's ailment as I did my wife's?

A conversation on the other side of the fence interrupted his thoughts. He moved closer.

"I can't believe Charlie's still living with that clutter! It's horrendous. Something was bound to happen. I noticed the animal ceased barking. Even a dog tires of wallowing in filth. I can imagine the home inside," his neighbor whispered to a friend.

"I hope it's a reality check, her friend responded. You mentioned that you've attempted to help, but he refused. Perhaps almost losing his new best friend to hoarding he won't try to remedy will provide a harsh awakening."

Shaking, tears flowed as Charlie backed away and returned inside.

"No more," he lamented.

Para mi tema, me inspiré y utilicé la publicación de @daily.prompt de 12 March 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3040: still living with that.

A continuación mi historia.

What a touching and well written micro fiction. Part of me wants to scold the neighbours for their gossip, especially considering the weight Charlie has been carrying since the loss of his wife. Yet in another sense, even though the gossip is wrong and unkind, such can spur a much needed change.

I like how Benzie is the turning point for him. Sometimes it takes something or someone we love to make us see what we have been avoiding. Well done. Take care and have a beautiful Sunday. 🌹

You know @kemmyb grief can manifest itself in many ways. Holding onto items with the feeling of not wanting to let go because it's under your control is one way that spouses handle it when their mate has passed. Sometimes they don't even recognize what is happening until it's overwhelming.

I know that accumulating an inordinate amount of items can lead to hoarding. In your mind's eye, you can't recognize it because surrounding yourself bring comfort. A complex issue that others are hard pressed to understand. Yes, the neighbor's gossip was wrong. But she has attempted to help. In a roundabout way, she finally did, and it sometimes takes that to "wake up" from your comfort.

Thanks so much for your visit and analysis of both sides of the issue. I appreciate it and your support. Take care and have a good rest of your day.

You are right. You explain Charlie's state thoughtfully. Grief does take on many forms and the way everyone handles it can't be the same. Sadly, people outside the situation only see 'the clutter' and not the pain and struggle behind it. Your micro fiction handles this sensitive subject with a lot of empathy. Thanks for sharing it.

You're so welcome.
