I Bought Some New Camera's

I picked up this set of 3 Mevo Start Cameras, made by Logitech

A dream of mine since leaving college was to record live gigs multi-cam, and I was close to getting it going just before Covid hit, then it all fell apart.

I tried to record my own band during Covid, to potentially live stream our jams, but a mix-mash of DSLRs and GoPros wasn't cutting it, so I put the idea to rest until I found cameras good enough for what I needed, and preferably at an affordable price.

A few months ago, I was floating around on YouTube, and was made aware of these Logitech Mevo Start cameras.

I'm going to list some of the good things about them.

  • 6 Hour Battery Life
  • Ability To Record, As Well As Livestream To 1 or All Platforms Directly From The App
  • No Cables, Unless You Need Longer Than 6 Hours of Filming
  • Discrete
  • Easy To Use App
  • Affordable
  • Good in-built microphones

I looked online, and on the official website, these three cameras would have cost me $1200, which is a lot more than I wanted to spend, so the dream almost died right there.

Then I checked CEX, and the three-pack in the town next to me was being sold for €390. I know it is a fair bit, but compared to what they cost new, it was a steal. So, without hesitation, I picked them up.

I have filmed 2 gigs so far with them, and there are plenty more to film. I also bought 1 more, so now I have four of them, which will give me a lot of coverage and options.

Filming gigs, I would obviously rather have 3-4 camera operators to get many more angles and interesting shots. But, we don't have the means for that, and also, we don't want to distract the audience or annoy anyone, so setting these up out of the way of everyone, and sporadically adjusting the angles throughout the night, is the better option.

Future Endevours

From this point on, I will continue to film the gigs and edit the footage after the fact, but soon I will be testing out their live streaming capabilities.

If I spend €180 for the year I will be able to live stream to everyone platform at once, but without the subscription you can only stream to one at a time. It's pretty obvious why it would be good to go out on all platforms at once, but it's a bit of steep cost.

I'll hopefully stream with them this week at our next band practice and I will know for sure how they hold up.

Are you mounting them around the stage? Does the app let you start and stop them? I've not looked into such things, but they look good. Obviously the editing gets complex with multiple cameras. I have tried using a couple when doing drum videos, but it's a lot of work. For our gigs we just tend to have a little Zoom camera that can do decent sound too.

I bought some fairly inexpensive clamps on Amazon, and I mount then up around the stage and out of the way of everyone. Then just hit record on the app and let them do their thing for the night, since all the gigs we run are collective gigs I record all the bands of the night, so they require a little bit of moving through the night, but not much. Then you can bring them into your editing software, sync it all and then you can just do a multicam edit, which is really handy as far as editing goes. You're essentially just listening to it, and clicking on each camera to the beat of the particular song, and if you're not happy, you can go back at make some minor changes.

Its a game changer, I think it would be worth checking out CEX to see if you can get a few. I just finished editing my bands performance and now we potentially have 11 songs to throw up on social media

That's cool. I recently learned that the Kdenlive video software I use can automatically sync video feeds from the audio so that can help for some of mine. For stuff at home I just use my phone and possibly a webcam. I still need to learn more about video editing to get better results.

!BEER

If you ever want to get on a call I'd be happy to give some pointers for editing, I enjoy it and I'm not the best, but would be able to answer questions and help out if needed.

I may take you up on that some time. I don't have anything I'm working on right now.

Give me a shout next time you have a project you're working on and we can get on a call, I'm happy to help, I find talking things through with others is good for sharpening my own knowledge

Hey @killerwot, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!
