RE: When to stop talking?

in Reflections8 days ago

It was interesting the other day where a US speaker at a university here in Finland censored his remarks about what is going on at the moment, because he was unsure if they would let him back into the country after. I suspect that the right of free speech in the US is more in concept than actuality.

I read a lot that it's quite like that. Free speech being selected, and any uncomfortable speech is still silenced (through scholarship not given and such). Mainly US citizens have the right to it. I doubt that a US speaker would have any problems going back, from what I know that's mostly the fear talking, as media exaggerates everything these days, on both sides. But if he's working at a university or such, there could be quite a lot of repercussions.

And as a foreign student? Or immigrant, even with green card? I'd rather stay silent, too. Luckily I don't have to got there.

I think in Finland it is pretty free to say whatever you want, without repercussions. However, there are probably some exceptions around certain types of inciting violence hate speech. But is that a limitation on freedom of speech, or a limitation on freedom of action?
