Baseline run - Marathon + 2000m climbing

IMG_1440.jpeg

Hey everybody, thanks for checking in!
In September I will be running a mountain marathon in Swiss. In order to prepare for that run I tried to create a simultation that I could run here in the Netherlands.

The goal of the simulation was to discover how I:

  • would handle running over 4 hours
  • would handle climbing around 2000m
  • could integrate powerhiking to distribute my energy
  • try new nutrition

I mimiced the Jungfrau elevation gains by running specific amounts of hill repeats in every quarter marathon:

  • first 10.55 km - 5 climbs (13% increase - running)
  • second 10.55 km - 11 climbs (7 @ 13% , 4 @ 25% increase. Running the 13%, powerhiking the 25%)
  • third 10.55 km - 16 climbs (8 @ 13% , 8 @ 25% , running 6 of the 13%, powerhiking the 25% (and 2 of the 13%)
  • last 10.55 km - 22 climbs (10 @ 13% , 12 at @ 25%. Running 8 of the 13%, powerhiking the remainder)

My nitrition plan:

  • energy gels every 20 min (isotonic)
  • bread with strawberry jelly around 2h (testing)
  • 2 snickers (3h and 5h in - testing)
  • 3 liters of water with electrolytes

I created my own aid station by parking my car closeby and having the food lined up for every segment. Allowing me to carry a bit less to make life a little easier!

In general the run went pretty well, it became though around 25km as I felt a blister popping up due to the slippery mud on the steap climb - but just focussing on the single climb over and over helped me to just ignore it.

The powerhiking went smooth as soon as I discovered how to use your abs and hands to support the legs.

The experience was fun! I do expect to be a little sorry next few days but we did it!

Happy running! ❤️

Well done! You are going to be sore for several days after that feat. Not an easy thing to replicate. Sorry to hear about that blister, those always really suck! It was a smart move to put together your own little aid station there with all the nutrition and hydration you were going to need though!

The real deal is going to be a challenge doing those Swiss mountains, but it sounds like with training sessions like these you should be up to the challenge. The one hard part might be the elevation, but that's hard to train for at the elevation you live.

I hope you recover well, it's not going to be fun the next couple days. Great job and some great scenery as always!

Wow, Switzerland! I can't wait to see lots of photos of that.

It's amazing how you're planning your strategy. It's great that there are still several months to go. I'm sure it'll go wonderfully.

Thanks my friend!
Switzerland is going to be an amazing adventure! Really looking forward to that.

Did you get the air out of the Salomon water bladder, I hate listening to the slosh when I am trying to run !LOL and were you able to consume that my jels, hopefully they have improved, I used to have trouble stomaching them after 5 or 6. I suppose I just did not practice using them enough.

Haha yeah, I forgot to take the air out of the bladder. Luckely I had music on as a nice distraction. I can take the gels without to much issues, I had planned to use the sandwich as a test around 2h 45min but I felt the need for some solid food! While the snickers (and chocomilk) are basically my go to recovery meal (within 5 min of finish), I tried them during the run - nutrition wise they are too heavy but a real bite was very welcome - will try the Cliff line as a better substitute next time!

What an incredible way to prepare this is genuinely one of the most thoughtful and disciplined training simulations I've come across. The way you broke down the marathon into quarter segments and matched the climbs to Jungfrau's elevation profile shows such a deep respect for the challenge ahead. Creating your own aid station with the car, timing the nutrition down to 20-minute intervals, and even testing how your body responds to powerhiking versus running at different gradients that's not just training, that's strategizing. And doing all of this in the Netherlands, where the terrain doesn't exactly hand you mountains on a silver platter? That takes serious creativity and commitment.

Also, huge respect for pushing through when that blister showed up at 25km and the mud made every climb slippery. The mental game of just focusing on one climb at a time is exactly what will carry you through in September. It sounds like you learned exactly what you set out to learn how to distribute energy, when to switch to powerhiking, and what your body needs to keep going. That sense of "we did it" at the end, even knowing the next few days might bring some soreness, is the sign of a run that mattered. September is lucky to have you showing up this prepared. Keep crushing it! 💪🏔️🏃‍♂️
